Agreements with the most important SAFEX registered silo owners and bulk-storage facilities countrywide enable us to store your products safely and professionally. BESTER is a member of the Grain Handling Organisation of Southern Africa (GOSA).
Moorreesburg Silobag Depot (MSD)
MSD is situated in the Swartland region of the Western Cape, near Moorreesburg. In 2010, MSD met all the requirements for storage as a JSE Commodity Derivative Market (SAFEX) delivery point, and was subsequently registered as such for grain, making it the first silobag depot in South Africa listed on the JSE. The facility has a capacity of 35 000 tons and is equipped with the latest grading facility, a weighbridge and electronic stock management system. MSD’s highly trained staff ensure the correct grading and management procedures. As the name of the depot indicates, grain is stored in silobags. The silobags are 60- to 100-metre-long polyethylene bags that can each take up to 200–300 tons of grain.
MSD has established a healthy element of competition in the grain storage industry. This encourages a continuous strive towards greater efficiency, which in turn results in lower storage costs. Since MSD was established in 2007, storage costs in the area have fallen by approximately 30%. For this reason, MSD plays an important role in making the free market principle of marketing grain in South Africa successful.
Bester Lucerne Depot
Bester Lucerne Depot is a lucerne (Alfalfa) processing plant situated in Jan Kempdorp, Northern Cape. The warehouses can store approximately 20 000 tons of Big Pack bales, weighing between 500 and 800 kilograms, depending on the bale size. This enables BESTER to store and transport producers’ lucerne as effectively as possible. The warehouse aims to add value by means of grading, milling and compacting lucerne.
Grading is done by means of a near-infrared (NIR) apparatus with the standards set by the New Lucerne Quality Index (NLQI). Bester compensates producers scientifically with regards to quality, and place a client-specific product in each segment of the market. Formulation for feed industries such as the dairy industry is done using the NLQI certificate.
Bester’s hammer mill has a milling capacity of 10 ton per hour. The product is milled according to the different needs of animal feed factories and cooperatives.
To ensure the best quality product, BESTER makes use of world class equipment to cut, rake and bale lucerne. John Deere Windrowers with crushers is used to cut lucerne and ensure the shortest possible time span from cutting to baling. A speed rake is used to keep the loss of leaves to the minimum. Bester’s Krone high density Big Pack balers and John Deere tractors bale the lucerne at optimal stage to guarantee high quality bales of up to 800kg.
